What is an Excavator useful for?

Excavators are heavy construction equipment machines that are primarily used for

  • digging
  • demolition
  • material handling.

Excavator Parts

An excavator consist of a cab, a boom, an arm, and a bucket or other attachments.

Cab

The cab is located on a rotating platform called the house and contains the operator’s controls and seat.

Boom

The boom is the arm that extends out from the house and is used to reach the excavation site.

Arm or Stick

The arm, or stick, is the section of the boom that extends out from the end of the boom and holds the bucket or other attachment.

Public Works & Construction

Excavators are commonly used in a variety of public works and construction projects, such as;

  • road building
  • building construction, and
  • utility installation.

Trench Digging

They are particularly useful for digging trenches for utilities, such as water, sewer, and gas lines, as well as for digging foundations for buildings.

Demolition Work

They are also used for demolition work, removing debris, and grading land.

Roadworks & Construction

In road construction, excavators are used for digging trenches for drainage, removing debris, and grading the land. They can also be equipped with attachments such as a hammer or a crusher to break up pavement or rock. Excavators are also used to dig holes for bridge pilings and other foundations.

They are versatile and can help to speed up the construction process by digging and leveling large areas of land quickly and efficiently.

Building & Construction

Excavators are also used in construction and building projects, particularly for digging trenches, foundations, and footings.

They can also be used to clear areas of trees or old roadworks for new construction.

Some excavators have a long reach that allows them to work on taller buildings and reach into tight spaces.

Excavator Attachments

Some of the most common excavator attachments include

  • buckets
  • hammers
  • grapples
  • thumbs, and
  • quick couplers.

Buckets

Buckets are the most common attachment, and can be used for digging and moving materials.

Hammers, Grapples & Thumbs

Hammers can be used for breaking up concrete and asphalt, while grapples and thumbs are used for handling logs and large debris. Quick couplers allow operators to quickly switch between attachments, and reduce the time needed to switch tools.

Small & Large Construction Projects

Our Mini excavators, such as the Kubota 1.7 tonne and the Kubota 3.5 tonne, are more maneuverable, which makes them perfect for smaller jobs and tight spaces.

Our large excavators like the Hitachi 24 tonne (often used for rock-breaking) or the Hitachi 35 tonne excavator are used for larger projects as they have greater power and reach.

We offer mini excavator dry hire or wet hire. Larger excavators are usually dry hire, but we can source an operator for you (we know enough of them).

The size of the excavator needed will depend on the job and what attachments are needed.

Our excavators come in different sizes and types and can be equipped with a variety of attachments for different tasks.
